Stacking/Combining Rides

#1
I think I know the answer but hoping for confirmation...ask for permission or beg for forgiveness...

I am heading out from Rapid City, SD in a few weeks to attempt the Lake Michigan loop. My ride there is a little over 1000 miles, likewise the ride back (mirror rides). Can I use the halfway stop of my lake loop (500 mile point) to add to the 1000 (on trip over) to count toward a BB ride and likewise the last 500 with the return trip? My mental anchoring point is the allowed "nesting" of 1000SS and 1500BB certification rides.

Would (theoretically) look like:
BB1500
Michigan Lake Loop Ride
BB1500

I have a route that does 1500/1000/1500 but thought I would at least ask the question.

Can you tell I'm a newbie?!

Short answer: yes.

Longer answer: I wouldn't really characterize what you propose as "nested" rides. Rather, they would be overlapping rides. Just be sure to obtain a receipt at the 500-mile point of your LM1000 to document the end of your first BB1500 and the start of your second BB1500 in addition to the receipts for the start and end of the LM 1000.

Ira,
I recently finished the JBR and road a bit over 5300 miles and I'm trying to figure out what rides I can claim. I have several rides that overlap and wanted to check with someone before I went to the trouble of compiling the evidence and submitting them. I filled up with gas and obtained a DBR at 6:28 on Sunday a full hour and a half before the rally started.

Ride 1: Bun burner 1500: 1519 miles from 6:28 Sunday to 13:49 Monday - 31.35 hours
Ride 2: SS2000: 2057 miles from 6:28 Sunday to 22:27 Monday - 39.9 hours
Ride 3: SS3000: 3065 miles from 16:48 Tuesday to 11:50 Friday - 71.5 hours
Ride 4: SS2000 - 2126 miles from 21:07 Tuesday to 19:59 Thursday - 46.9 hours
Ride 5: SS2000 - 2120 miles from 12:54 Wednesday to 11:50 Friday - 46.16 hours
Ride 6: SS1000 - 1030 miles from 12:54 Wednesday to 10:54 Thursday - 22.15 hours

Rides 1 and 2 overlap, I completed a BB while on my way to the SS2000.
Rides 3, 4, and 5 overlap, I completed both SS2000s (which overlapped) while on my way to the SS3000
Rides 4 and 5 overlap, I started and 2nd SS2000 (ride 5) while completing a SS2000 (ride 4)
Ride 6 overlaps with rides 4 and 5 - I completed a SS1000 on my way to completing the SS2000s

Which rides can I claim?
I figure I can claim 1 and 2 since completing a SS2000 does not necessarily require competing a BB
I know I can claim ride 3 and I think I can claim either ride 4 or ride 5 but not both
Not sure if I can claim Ride 6 at all.

Your input greatly appreciated.

My input is that if I provided such a service for everyone who asks, that is all I would be doing. :) But I can tell you that one can't complete an SS2K without completing at least one SS1K.

I advise giving it your best shot and letting the verification team sort it out.

Thanks Ira. So I think the rule is that if completing a longer ride requires that you complete the shorter ride you can't claim the shorter ride (e.g. if you're doing a BBG you can't claim a SS1000 because you'd have to ride 1000 miles in 24 hours to complete 1500 miles in 24 hours), but if the longer ride does not require that you complete the shorter ride (e.g. you can complete a SS2000 without doing a BB if you ride over 500 miles in the last 12 hours) then you can claim the shorter ride along with the longer ride.

That's what I've read and I was looking for some confirmation before I went to the time and effort of submitting rides that might have no hope of being approved.

That is the basic rule.

Put another way, if one ride by definition is completed within another, we would issue one certificate. You mentioned the classic example of why we wouldn't issue a Saddlesore 1000 certificate within a Bun Burner GOLD. I would point out that it also holds true for a Bun Burner 1500 - one can't do a BBG without competing the BB1500. This is in contrast to the Bun Burner 1500/Saddlesore 1000, where one can complete the former without by definition completing the latter.
