48/10 route review

Paul K -

Thank you for your questions. The icons on the map are a little deceiving - I didn't want to spend the time changing them all. They are 48 gas station stops, 1 for each state. However, I will be definitely stopping more than that! On my K75, the gas light comes on at ~140 miles, and I generally stop every 100 miles or so when it's hot out, as to not cook the precious fuel pump.

A few have asked for my stops from my 48/10 last summer

If you want my basecamp maps let me know I will be glad to share.

Here is my hotel list.

I started in Atlanta on a Friday after working a 1/2 day, so I went to my meetings in the morning got back to my hotel at noonish and then went to my first gas stop to get my starting receipt and first stop for GA.

Courtyard Winchester Medical Center 300 Marriott Drive Winchester, VA 22603 USA
Fairfield Inn Rochester South 4695 W. Henrietta Rd. Henrietta, NY 14467
Americas Best Value Inn 4402 Dakota Ave, South Sioux City NE 68776
Fairfield Inn & Suites Billings 2026 Overland Avenue Billings, MT 59102
DAYS INN TWIN FALLS JEROME 1200 Centennial Spur Jerome, ID 83338
Travelodge Cortez 1120 East Main Street Cortez, CO 81321
Fairfield Inn Joplin 3301 South Range Line Road Joplin, MO
Fairfield Inn Marianna 4966 Whitetail Dr, Marianna, FL 32448

These are my stops from the plan. If I saw a more convenient gas station or one with cheaper gas I stopped there. Not sure what your fuel range is but mine was 280 so make sure that you can make all the distances. Some stops were 20 mies apart and others were 250 miles apart, especially out west.

- I may regret taking HWY 12 (Lolo pass) through Idaho, but it seems to still be faster than going up through Spokane
I would add caution before doing this.

That was the route I chose, and it's not as simple as just riding the Lolo Pass, however fun that is.

It is about 150 brutal miles in the middle of a very long journey. Add to that the fact that it puts you out of place to grab WA and OR, and getting back on track means another 200 miles of similar roads.

Great, if you want the fun, but be aware that some of it could be at night. Spokane, and the regular route is faster and easier.

This was actually one of the top highlights of the trip. However, I agree that it may not be ideal for everyone.

(Deer Lodge -> Missoula -> Spokane -> Boise is 704 miles, 10h 46 min)
(Deer Lodge -> Missoula -> Kooskia -> Clarkston ->Ontario -> Boise is 602 miles, 10h 58 min)

We ended up staying at Deer Lodge, MT (on night two of the ride) because EVERY hotel in Missoula was full (due to the college kids returning to school that weekend). This allowed us to pull in for the night at 7:45pm and get a solid night sleep. We got up around 4:30am and rode the 90 minutes to Lola. By that time, it was just starting to become light out as we began riding Highway 12 towards Kooskia, ID and Clarkston, WA. Our finish that day was in Wendover, UT.

If it was raining/snowing or at night - then it would have been a deal breaker and we would have continued on towards Spokane.

I've been playing. Consideration being given to this ride as my Retirement (from work...) accomplishment.

I've taken the MTF western route from their 2012 ride and hacked on it a bit. Yes, Lolo Pass is in the existing routing. Re-reading the last few posts in this thread might make me reconsider that routing. My planning has me running the route clockwise, with day 2 starting in Clarkston, WA.

I'm now looking at dates that the 200-odd riders/pillions that have accomplished this ride (as of the ride list currently posted...) - looks like this:

6 Unknown date
Apr 5
May 49
Jun 40
Jul 90*
Aug 13
Sep 17
Oct 2
* IBR 2011 - 75 Participants scored with the completion

Statistically, riders that didn't partake in IBR '11 are accomplishing this earlier in the year (May, June).
