I'm coming in from the UK to take part in the Heart of Texas Rally amongst others and wanted to complete the 50cc Coast to Coast run. So looking for any advice especially on the questions below.
Firstly the best place in San Diego to obtain the starting receipt. I don't know the area at all and just wanted to get a feel for where to go and where to avoid to get the receipt at 3am..

Fuel planning. Is there a need to plan this on the 50cc ride or is there plenty of opportunity along the route not to have to bother ?.
Any other advice much appreciated.

John, do you have an idea of what your preferred fuel load range in miles is? I did the 50CC last spring, so I can look to see how applicable my data is to yours and then send you some or all of my route via GPX.

Thanks for the reply buddy.
I have a comfortable 280 miles tank range under normal conditions.

More specifically to your question about SDO (I'll include JAX as well).
  1. JAX Gate Gas

  2. Shell SDO

This is REALLY useful!!!! I did this run a way back and I hired a video guy to make a short documentary film before I knew how to edit videos myself. I hired two knuckleheads and rented a minivan. One guy was a pot smoking deadhead and the other a Vet retired cop. Oil and water my friend! The video guy got the flu bad!!!! so for the whole trip he was curled up in a ball suffering virally. The oil & water dual almost threw hands at each other in El Paso cuz the hippie almost ran me over 3-4 times recording. The video project stopped in TX due to cameraman's illness but I did do a trailer for the documentary but problem was that there was NOT enough content to fill up 15-min.

I had John & Eric from the Hoka Hey ride partial route from FL to LA with the old guy (white beard) in the video riding a Honda was my riding partner. The guy in the slingshot rode partial route because we went from Coldfoot, AK to Prudhoe Bay, AL together in 2015. Fun ride and dying to do it again. I love my moto-adventures!

I said all that to say this...... My IBA buddy met us at CA border and escorted us to the famous gas station everyone gets the final gas receipt before heading to the ocean to dip my waterproof boots in. I am glad i have the POI gas station.............. April 2024 I am going to record this damn ride myself because if ya want it done right.......

Did any of you guys ride through a shit load of deer between west Texas and Nevada???? I saw a load of them at night running across the Interstate I-10. Keep those eyes peeled and speeds down at night for wildlife!

I started at Dog Beach in San Diego and used the 76 Gas Station at 2305 Sunset Cliffs Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107.
It was just up the road from Ocean Beach/Dog Beach and was open at 4 am on Monday. Seemed well maintained and had paper in the receipt printer, your mileage may vary of course.

My range is 200~220 depending on the speeds I am maintaining.
I did run really tight on fuel in West Texas but that is because my planned stop was closed due to no power to the pumps when I pulled in. The next fuel was nearly 30 miles away while my range was showing as less than 20 miles. Nothing I could do but keep the speeds down to conserve fuel, go easy on acceleration, and hope my fuel gauge/range was pessimistic. I made it to the next town but my range had read zero for at least the last 6 miles.

Finished at the Gate Store # 1421 2520 S. 3rd Street Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250.
Again it was right on my route, big, clean, brightly lit, well staffed, and open at around 3 to 4 am.

I almost never preplan my fuel stops I just start running searches along my current route when I get down to 50-60 miles of range left. If I am going to push it I will call ahead and verify hours and availability of fuel. Usually I pick a station that give me a back up can be multiples at the same exit or another exit within range. i just find there are to many variables' to preplan all the stops. I've hit headwinds or had sections where the flow of traffic is high enough to affect my mileage and I end up doing the above anyway. It's also good practice if your ever going to end up in a Rally where you just don't have the luxury of time to preplan stops.

In San Diego, I liked the Shell at the corner of Sunset Cliffs and Voltaire. Easier entrance and less traffic...but it will depend on the time of day/night you get there.

I think that's the one where I stopped probably seven years ago when I did my last Coast to coast. Remember going to dog park which is right on the ocean and that's where I got my water. Another brother of mine IBA told me this is the one to go to. Thank you for the map link
