National Parks Tour Series and getting an Iron Butt number (Becomming a member)

I tried to search the formum for this and couldn't find the answer. My wife and I would like to get our Iron Butt number and be part of the Iron Butt crowd :)

Do we have to do a Saddle Sore 1000 to accomplish this, or will doing the National Parks Tour Series work?

We really want to do the National Parks Tour, and hopefully that will gain us our number too.
