For those states with designated Ride Around____ required routes, must the start/finish be in one of the required cities/towns, or can it start somewhere along the route and provided the rider obtains a start and finish receipt at that same location, as long as receipts are obtained in all required checkpoints and in the designated order (either clockwise or counter-clockwise)? This question gets asked occasionally on the FB page. As an Admin on that page, I would like to know for future reference.

When in doubt, read the rules. :)

For the Ride Around Georgia, for example, the rules state:

"You may start at any required city. "

Although the instruction should use the "shall" instead of "may", this means the ride needs to start (and end) in a required city. In fact, it makes completing an SS1K easier if one just starts the ride at one of the required cities - it holds off on starting the clock until then, providing more time to complete the in-state ride.

That said, if one wanted to nest an in-state SS1K within, say, a Bun Burner 1500, it would be fine to start or end the larger ride before/after starting/ending the in-state ride.

If any FB users have questions such as this, you can refer them to me here on the Forum, or at [email protected].

Thanks, Ira. Yes the "shall" vs. "may" is the stickler. And yes, I frequently refer folks to this forum for definitive answers. Doesn't mean they follow my suggestion, but at least they are informed that this forum exists.

Just to make sure, we have a rider who claims to have done a Ride Around New York State this past June and to have started/ended it in Colonie NY (Albany). He posted this in response to someone asking if he can start in a location that is not one of the required cities (Newburgh-Champlain-Watertown-Liverpool/Syracuse-Buffalo-Jamestown).

I will check to be sure I have it correct. But consider this simplified case:

A ride around your state is circular. The required cities are at the north, south, east, and west points on the circle we shall call A, B. C, and D. Your house is in the center of the circle. if you started from your house and went to A, B, C, and D and then ended at your house, you would have visited all required cities and started and ended in the same city. But that would NOT have been a ride "around" the state - you would have missed the segment between D and A.

Although this wouldn't be the case if you lived somewhere along the necessary route, you can see the problem in writing a rule that would cover each and every potential case. What if someone wanted to start 5 miles off the route? How about 10 miles? How about 1 mile?

Mike just got back to me. As I describe it above - one needs to start and end the ride in one of the required cities.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Well, then there's an issue with that particular rider's certificate, since he did not follow the rules for a Ride Around NY. He rode the entire loop, hitting all checkpoints, but started and finished near Albany, which is halfway between Champlain and Newburgh. But apparently this should not qualify as a Ride Around cert, but only as an in-state SS1000.

What is the process to submit NEW "Lap around ...." rides for submission?

I have worked one up for a "Lap Around the Grand Canyon" of 1033 miles. Biggest challenges are hitting 2 major tourist spots--- North Rim and Grand Canyon in the same 24 hour period. Suggest required spotwalla type documentation with a combination of DBRs and PHOTO Doc of bike and signs for proof.

Here is the link to the proposed ride----

The first step is for you to actually ride it. That will give you a chance to determine if there are any specific issues than need to be addressed. You can then forward it to me or Howard Entman with all the details (documentation points, time, if there would be a GOLD version of the ride, etc.).

Possible GOLD ride----- to include a lap around the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Capitol Reef National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, and Grand Canyon National Park.

My appologies, I forgot to add: There are also "Ride Around" rides and "Lap of" rides whose geographical boundaries are larger than one state (e.g. Ride Around the Carolinas, Lap of the South).
