ZedPilot crashes at PI historics meet

#1
This a copy of what I posted on FarRiders this arvo.

I received a call from ZedPilots better half to inform me that Matt went down hard this morning at PI, and asks if there is anyone in the group who can contact/see him. He was transport by ambulance to the Alfred hospital with two broken shoulders and some ribs.

If any can see him can you please contact me on 0417183551 as Kate can't get over there till Tuesday it see him.

As usual the response was fantastic with Hackle getting into see him after his first surgery and he posted this:

After a phone call from Clint and another from myself to Fattymick in Tassie I have just got of the phone after speaking to emergency at the Alfred Hospital. Zpilot is about to be transferred up to ward. He was supposed to have been moved to the ward at 4.30pm., obviously things are a bit slow. As it turns out I'm at my wifes home in Officer [Melb.] at the moment. Rode down from Bairnsdale for afternoon tea, as you do. I'll try and ring Fatman again, he didn't answer the last call. My plan is to ride into the Alfred and see Matthew for a short visit. A friendly face could be enjoyed in his current situation. Further news when it's available.

Then this:

I'm at My wife's [Elwyn] home as I type. Roast dinner didn't last long on the plate. Yum,yum. Now for the update on Matt's [Zedpilot] condition. As you've worked out I was down at Elwyn's for afternoon tea. Clint's call to me, then mine to Fattymick in Tassie had me on the bike Alfred Hospital bound. Reception at emergency had me wait a little while as they were still attending to him. Finally nurse goes into inform him that Graham Harris was outside. At this stage he had just come out of a "little sleep". He said he didn't know me and as such she couldn't let me in. Didn't know me, he must have still been under. With my FarRider cap in hand she went back into him, reemerging quickly to escort me in.
The crash happened as he entered the main straight [turn 12] at between 180--200 kmh. He ran wide, got onto the "marbles", loose rubber, and tried in vain to bring it back on line. Finally into the gravel onto the grass and as he said "no bringing it back from there".
Result, two dislocated shoulders, rib damage and very few cuts and abrasions. Racing leathers work. Shoulders were put back in and he may be up for an operation tomorrow. The most important thing I did for him was rang his better half Kate and they had a long conversation. I did have to hold the phone to his ear as both his arms are in slings tied together. I'm sure Ox will know exactly what I'm talking about.
Fatman an LTP have offered Kate a bed for her Melb. stay, she apparently is flying in on Tuesday. They will also visit him tomorrow by which time he should be in a ward.
He looked good, as can be, and was very happy to see a familiar face even if he didn't know who Graham Harris was. I was happy to just be available to tie up a few "loose ends".

Followed by ZedPilot:

Hi guys quick update. Had some time under a general this arvo, they have got both shoulders back in, going to have surgery tomorrow AM to fix the breaks, one in left and two In right shoulder. Huge call out to the FR family, thank you, Hackel appreciate the visit! Will update when I know more. I will heal, apparently the bike is worse than me.....

I'll atempt to keep all upto date as info becomes available

Regards

Ron, he may not "still be having a go" for much longer as the the last thing Kate said was along the lines of "racebikes, race gear and a 20lts of diesel + match"
I bought Marls a motorcycle for her birthday a few years back. My Mother went ape.... Marls broke her leg dancing. Need I say more?

Update on Matt's condition.

We visited Zedpilot (Matt) at the Alfred Hospital this afternoon and he was in good spirits considering his injuries.

He has his 2 arms in a sling which is supporting his shoulders. He is waiting to be operated on but was unclear at the moment what the Doctors are going to do.

He can use his phone so is keeping up with your good wishes.

The next few days I would expect will dictate where he is heading with regard to both his surgery requirements and then recovery time afterwards.

His mates from the racing fraternity are arranging for his van and bike wreckage to be returned back to Tassie for him.

Matt had nothing but praise for the racetrack medical team and ambo's that transported him back to Melbourne and also the team at the Alfred Hospital.

Update on Matt's condition.

LTP and I visited Matt today at "The Avenue" private hospital.

He had the operation last Thursday on his right shoulder and had the ball repaired and the cup part screwed back together after it had shattered in the crash. The surgeon said it was the worst he had seen but having said that he is very happy with how the 6.5 hour op went.

Matt's left shoulder is fractured and he also has 5 broken ribs but time should allow them to repair themselves.

Both arms are in slings to support his injuries and has some good juice to keep the pain at bay.

No other breaks have been found but he is a very sore boy.

The rider who was behind Matt at the time of the crash said to him that he flew 10 foot in the air before hitting the ground and tumbling.

All being well he flies back home this Wednesday 8th to recuperate.

Matt will update the forum when he is up to it.

All the best with your road to better health Zedpilot.

Update....

Matt has been doing it really tough, after being moved from the Alfred to the Avenue where he had to under go major surgery to his right shoulder and have all the tendons and ligaments reconnected, the left should operation went well.
It was about this time that more broken bones were found as well as some internal injuries and he had to be transferred back to the Alfred. Operation and complications sorted His partner had him flown by RFDS back to Launceston to a hospital that knows him well :lol
Matt was on the mend but took a bad dive last Wednesday when an infection took hold where the PICC Line was removed. I spoke to Kate again on Friday and they had managed to get a new line in his neck to get fluids and antibiotics and his temperature was dropping and he is on the mend.

I'll post more news as it comes to hand.

I caught up with a Matt yesterday arvo and he has lost a lot of weight and has some movement in his left arm at last, the right shoulder now has a great scar that he reckons with some ink could be made to look like PI track lol. He won't be walking through airport security any more without the alarm going off...lol
The scars from the abdominal surgeries are also healing well. If you text him he may not answer right away as he can't pickup his phone yet without assistance.
He's going to be in hospital for another two to three weeks yet with a lot of Physio to come over the next year.
I hoping that he'll be back on his 14R in about 18 months if all goes well.

Well...

Matt is on the improve in little baby steps, he's hoping to start Physio on the right shoulder this week if the surgeon is happy with what he sees.
He really is a shadow of his former self
Kate is looking very tired with all the travel she's doing but is managing to keep Matt centred and his sprits high coz as you can imagine they are a bit low.
Matt is really hoping that he can go home soon, but is going to need a lot of help from support agencies.
