Right had another go at this.

All Russian insurers who do this type of cover have no quoted.

This is probably due to amount of work involved for little or no return for them.

This leaves the border option or a specialist travel broker who does a lot of this type of thing. Unfortunately I don't know of any.

Looking at Campbell Irvine, they seem to specialise in Travel Insurance & whilst this is important the motor side is where if it all goes wrong you will have the biggest cost/legal problems.
Just give Campbell Irvine a ring all they did for us was motor incs not travel there only in the UK and if they say no then you know.

That's not very nice you know you would love it.
All the bits are coming of today and getting powder coated so I can ride with you looking all clean and smart well before you rode down to Dover Light House

Visa application filed! (With dates of entry to each country, each time, visited in the last ten years - each ERTE produces several entries)

I'm going to adopt Coxy's advice about insurance: get it at the border and wing it, I'm only going to live once. For a variety of reasons I'm going to go for a straight there and back trip rather than wandering around Russia apart from Moscow. I have to be back in Scotland the following weekend and it all seems to fit a lot better that way.

I would love to come on this but with the BBR being the weekend before and the Scandinavian Rally the weekend after (and having been through Russian borders twice before), it's out for me.

I know that this sounds like I am being a bit of an old woman, but getting through the Russian border as a Brit, is not quite the same or quite as quick as passing through passport control at the Chunnel .....

I received my Russian visa today, time to get on with this!

My visa, obtained with assistance from Real Russia as recommended by JY, is good from 31st May to 8th June inclusive.
My booking at the Cosmos hotel is for check-in on 1st June, check-out 3rd June.

Time to start planning properly. I shall be doing a broadly straight there and back ride and would prefer to be riding mob-handed in Russia and probably the European rides there and back as well so expressions of interest should be made here.

The current list of known attendees is:-
  1. saphena
  2. Tom Tom
  3. Joy
  4. Mike Strong
  5. thomas
  6. AyrtonO
  7. Tatyana
  8. Ziggy
  9. Duvskog
  10. Belizibub
  11. Jo
  12. Jaybee

Ok a bit late to the party but i'm in. Just seemed a shame not to take this opportunity.
Will have to start sorting a visa , i have seen something from John Y showing how to fill in the application and where to go so ill look that up and get cracking.
How long is everyone stopping in Moscow for 1 or 2 nights ?. Would be a shame not to stop an extra day and see the sights.
Bob your booking in to the Cosmos on Thursday night are you thinking of being at the border late Wed or early Thursday given the possible delays. ?
We will have a chat in Devon if your going.

Yes, let's chat in Devon.
I've just changed my Cosmos booking to 2 nights (1st and 2nd June) and my visa will run from 31.5 to 4.6.......if I get approved.
Latvian border to Moscow is about 400 miles and 7.5 hours according to google maps.

I was going to suggest that we aim to overnight in Terehova (Latvian/Russian border) for the night of 31st May then get an early start on the 1st aiming to get to the Cosmos hotel for around 2 p.m.

I was aiming to leave on 30th and it is 1385 miles from Calais to Terehova which is an easy-ish 2 days.
Some might wish to do a certificate ride to get there so there could be a couple of options here:
1. Everyone to make their own way across Europe and we congregate as a posse on that night of 31st in Terehova.
2. Those that wish to make the whole thing more of a group effort can meet in Calais or at a pre-agreed overnight stop in Germany or Poland and do the rest of it together.
We'll talk more in Devon but I put this out as food for thought.

I will be coming straight off the BBRally in Leicester on Monday so no point me heading back up to Leeds only to turn around next morning.
So for me its better to head straight onto the continent on Monday.
Ive found the hotel below, 16 miles from the border that may be of interest for the night before crossing.
Not sure of the average time it takes to get in to Russia, anyone have an idea ?
Having ridden here last year I can tell you its slow going after Warsaw with Lithuania and Latvia being very slow indeed.

Hotel Lucia in Latvia 26.00 per night (Kr. Barona iela 20-1, Ludza, LV-5701, Latvia) only 16 mile from Russian border

To be clear. The files above contain maps of Russia, not a group of waypoints or routes. Go whichever way you fancy but, if you want your Garmin to help, you'll want those files.

Ok, stupid question time.
I downloaded the OSM generic maps per Bob's recommendation.
I have successfully imported them into BaseCamp and they appear in my "Maps" drop-down list.
How do I get them onto my actual Nav unit ?
