Is a GPS absolutely necessary? Probably not. But it's one piece of equipment that I'd strongly recommend to anyone new to rallying. If nothing else, it should reduce stress and increase your enjoyment by freeing up mental bandwidth that would otherwise be consumed by time-distance calculations.
Arguments about the quality of GPS vs Cloud-based phone apps aside, aving the ability to see "Oh, I'm riding right by a bonus that wasn't part of my original plan...", combined with itinerary timing (checkpoint and finish time-of-arrivals) can make a world of difference - those are features that Google Maps just doesn't have yet.
