Paul - I'm planning a 100ccc for next year from San Diego to Jacksonville. What gas stop do you use in Jax as a starting point?

Scott
Seems to be several in the Jacksonville Beach community. I'm trying to isolate to those in the immediate vicinity of Butler Blvd & A1A (a.k.a. 3rd St S)

The station that's at Beach & A1A seems to be a frequent location for many rides. Right east of there is beach access as well. I was on a work trip a few years ago, so I've done a bit of recon activity in the region.

So, *now* I'm dealing with the issue there may be some concerns post Hurricane Matthew grazing the Florida coast for the next few days. Sure hoping (like everyone there...) the storm drifts further east.

Are you going to have a spot link available?

Thanks Ken - Since I will be crossing back-and-forth using I-10, I'm looking for the most direct/quickest route to Jax Beach and a trusted gas stop/turn-around point. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated or sharing your route plan if created in google maps. Good luck on your trip. Hopefully Matthew will turn north and move away from the coast.

Yes - posted 24-48 hours before launch. Since I'm also doing another ride W to E, there will be a separate link for that.

Eastbound...I-10 to I-95, then I-95 south until you reach FL-202 (J Turner Butler Blvd), east until you reach Beach Blvd (A1A) - less than 10 miles. Turn left onto A1A (3rd St S) - I see a few stations as you head north

I found Mike "IB Pete" Langford's 50cc spreadsheet a couple weeks ago. Mike's version is here: http://employees.org/~mlangfor/50cc/50ccplan.xls

I had a much more complex version I'd worked up a couple of years ago. I recalled seeing this version, thought I'd put it to use instead. A couple of additions were made...and now contributed for the entertainment & use of all!

Ken,

Nice ride plan. I noticed the average leg distance of Plan A is 159 miles and Plan B 160 miles. What bike are you riding? I'm thinking of switching from my Concours with a 5.5 gallon tank where I generally plan 150-175 mile legs to the KTM 1290 SA with a 7.9 gallon tank for my 100ccc ride and try to plan an average leg distance of 225-250 miles to reduce number of stops (without having to add a fuel cell). I will certainly use your plan as a guide - with all the work done, I might just follow it to the tee. Much appreciated.

2006 Goldwing. The distance are planned a bit short, but it's column H which are the leg distances. As you see, it's widely varying from one location to the next - mainly planned that way.

Early stretched distances of up to 200 miles are as a result of being fresh, and being along the east coast, so other fuel options could be utilized if needed. EDIT:I've done a ride much closer to home - wrote about it elsewhere - where I ran a SS1000 at a BBG pace. Knowing that a lot of the gains made in verifying you'll make a 22 or 23 hour BBG lies in setting that early pace, then maintaining that for as long as it's practical. See the average speeds I'm attempting to maintain during each leg of the ride, verifiable as I'm riding by the data in column G, overall average.

Certain stops are planned 'short' to take advantage of timing (east side of Houston before Katy lanes become no charge for HOV's), to allow full distance across major metro areas without issues for fuel, and also a bit of 'split the difference' stops. See the stops just before the Motel 6 stop on night 1. If there's ~325 miles to go to a point, take advantage of a stop in the middle to refuel and if need be, refresh, in order to continue.

Update: Why to Whynot completed. I continued the ride to Jacksonville early this morning; 24 hr gas is readily available at the Jacksonville Beach A1A near Butler Blvd. I believe I have enough to also qualify for a SS2000

Oh, and the rookie officer was drawn to sign my form - his first!

@Ira, @mkneebone, Just an off the wall observation and question. I've read that the Jax Bch P.D. is very accommodating for the autographing of witness forms for our organization; it's true. I was another that the dispatcher asked "Oh, did you just come in from San Diego?" when I asked for an officer to sign my form. He laughed when I said, no a few miles short, but that I would be *starting* a ride from there early tomorrow morning.

Has there been any consideration to any sort of a "Thanks" from the IBA as an organization for their support in doing this?

There is the IBA Recognition Award, described at

You could nominate them.

Ken,
Congratulations on the ride completion - good idea of an acknowledgement to the PD for their willingness to sign witness forms.

True, yet the write-up talks about "extraordinary".

Does that meet the criteria? I'm not certain, but it would seem that 'going beyond what is usual, regular, or customary' -or- it's just another service provided by this small department as a public service.

It's a better ten minutes spent chatting with an old grey-beard motorcyclist than dealing with drunks in public.

I'll probably simply send a thank you letter once I've got it together.

Ride(s) completed; awaiting me putting things together in order to submit. With multiple rides, it will take a bit, but I did segregate all data & photographed all receipts and signed forms.

Oh, I believe due to my conversation mentioned in my prior post with the rookie Jax Bch officer, when I arrived at the Gate station (about 1:20 am), there just happened to be *two* Jax PD officers.

As I walked up to them to ask them for a signature, the corporal asked me "How many miles do you plan to ride today?". :D

At that point, I did admit that I would be attempting to ride ~2640 miles in less than 50 hours.

His reply wasn't exactly printable here, but let's just state that he thought my sanity may be a bit challenged. At that point, he did speak kindly of our endeavors to his other rookie officer.

Heading home in the morning.

<...>If traveling the speed limit at all times and stopping 10 minutes for gas every 2 hours, you can make it to Junction, Texas in 19 hours.<...>
My time was a little over 22 hours for this.

I *know* I lost a bit of time with at least one, if now two, extra stops, along with some slow-and-go traffic along the loop road in San Antonio during afternoon/evening rush hour.

Here's where things got real fuzzy for me (as I'm in the middle of my ride report write-up...). I knew all the time I was ahead of the schedule I had laid out for myself. My plan was 23 hours for the BBG, with some small amounts of padding built in. (Example: I knew I was not going to be able to pull of sub-10 minute fuel stops the entire way. Those six to 8 minute stops I knew I *was* going to be able to pull off, I did pull off early in the ride. Those were the cushion times that I'd built in. When I pulled of a longer-than-10 minute stop? No problem...)

I just completely lost track of time; and it's worse when the sun goes down. Yes, there's a clock staring you in the face, but at some point in the ride, it's just another set of numbers to confuse you.

Now, what *I* did? My Android phone is on my handlebars. I set a countdown timer for 50 hours at the beginning of the ride. I didn't look at it until the morning when I woke up, and saw that there was still 22-odd hours remaining for me to travel the ~850-0dd miles remaining to SDO.

I *could* have rolled over and slept another hour or two... :D

Completed the 50 CC JAX to SDO last weekend Apr 29-30. Left JAX 5:13 AM EDT arrived SDO Monday 2:07 AM PDT. Total time 47 hrs 54 mins. Very lucky with the weather. Tornadoes in Dallas, we were dodging everything. Ended up stopping in Kerrville, Tx about 40 miles short of Junction due to a thunderstorm. Started to hail as we pulled under the hotel awning. We barely got wet. Only rain we had in entire 5000 mile round trip. We did have a terrible headwind and had about a max 160 mile range between fuel stops. 18 total counting start and finish. I have still not been able to manage the 10 minute fuel stop. Probably why I could never do a Bun Burner Gold. I was not prepared for the temperature drop in the Ca. mountains. All of a sudden was 43 deg. Then my gas light came on. Fortunately a gas station around exit 73. Also not prepared for the screwy Ca gas nozzles and I think got as much gas on my tank as in it. Ended up arriving with a little over 2 hours to spare. Not sure who recommended the 24 hr burrito place next to the Shell station but I would pass unless you are really hungry. At that point I was more concerned about finding a place to sleep as our room at the Marriott Pulse was not available until 4:00 PM. We ended up finding a room at the Motel 6 on Hotel Circle? for under $100. After 2 shots each of Johnnie Walker Blue we had been carrying I was happy to sleep a few hours. Trip home also zero rain but worst wind I have ever seen. Especially around Amarillo. I think we may be the only ones ever to ride 5000 miles around the USA without getting wet. Was a great experience and I have nothing but respect and admiration for those who complete some of the more "extreme" rides.

Dale - glad you didn't have any bad "issues" with the motorcycle or other vehicles.

Great report - congratulations on your success!!!!
