No idea about the Tesco in the UK, but in the US what I've seen is that the same places that required you to remove your helmet before, still require you to remove your helmet now, just add - "and put on a mask". I think it's simply that they can't think rationally, just regurgitate the house rules.

In an Indian casino gas station years ago I was heading for the loo and was told I had to remove my helmet, (modular, flipped up at the time). I did so, took care of business and on the way out asked if the security guard had a moment to chat. He was friendly and I kept it friendly too. I showed him how with the chin bar closed like a FF helmet, I could grab the chin bar and wield the helmet like a club very effectively. He asked to hold my helmet and took a couple of mock swings getting a feel for the heft. He took on a very sober expression and looked at me and said "that would hurt for sure". I agreed and told him I just wanted him to have an understanding that when we wore the helmet it might be a "disguise" to him, but the moment we took it off it could become a very effective weapon against him too.

They didn't change their rules, but the next time I went thru there the same guard saw me and motioned me over. He told me that they discussed it at some length at a security meeting and while they decided not to change any policy about wearing or bringing helmets inside, then did amp up some new training on how to defend agains that possibility and had a pretty good discussion on watching for attitude changes when someone was asked to remove their helmet.

A perfectly good response would be: the helmet IS your mask. With the visor down, it covers your nose and mouth, so it qualifies.

:D Don't go trying to apply common sense to this issue. The places that forbid helmet wearing inside universally do so because they want your face clearly on camera. Never mind that the mask probably covers more than the helmet did. As I said before, they just regurgitate the company policy, not actually think about what they are asking or why.

We just had a local KFC robbed at about 11:45 pm by two young men wearing sun glasses and masks. Apparently no one got suspicious until they pulled out a pistol and demanded money. That business now locks the doors earlier and just keeps the drive thru open, which has cameras that capture license plates and the people at the window. Time will tell if that helps any.

common sense seems to have been removed from the brains of the majority of the population. Went into a shop to buy some wellies wearing my mask of course and was greeted by two shop assistants not wearing masks. not having study the rules in any great depth i asked why they were not wearing masks they informed me because they work in the shop they don't have to wear masks its a choice for them according to the rules, and anyway the lady stated that wearing a mask steamed her glasses up so she could not wear one even if the rules said she had to. pretty amazed at the lack of intelligence and courtesy shown perhaps she wont be able to cope with the respirator or ventilator as they may steam her glasses up too. the manager who came over and joined us who was wearing a mask, agreed it was not good but could do nothing.
after selecting a suitable pair of wellies i went to a till the assistant then removed the security tag this in fact was a pin stuck through the material gob-smacked i challenge him he agreed it now had a small hole in it but he assured me it was fine. i very politely pointed out a small hole rendered said wellie no longer waterproof he then informed me it would only be waterproof if it said so on the label, at this point i lost it a little bit words along the lines of blithering idiot may have slipped out.

i have come to the conclusion that some people have been dumbed down successfully to a point were they no longer maintain independent thought and can only follow simple instructions and never question any rule / instruction.
p.s. i got a pair of wellies from the stock room that had not yet been fitted with a security tag. still avoiding petrol stations that may have the helmet removal rule.

are well every shoe on display had a security tag apparently. plus these were fancy and not a plain colour (not for me by the way). so a practical solution was not an option

If common sense were actually common, we wouldn't have a term for it. ;)
