RBLR1000 7th June 2025

I am sorry to say that I will not be contributing to The Royal British Legion again.

It would take way more than we raise every year to pay the salary of the new member of staff they hired to produce their new diversity poppy rainbow metal badge..
agreed i stopped contributing to any orgasnised charities many years ago, this was really frowned on when people at work were doing charity runs collections etc. this decision was not taken lightly by myself as it made me socially unclean in the workplace, but a review of top executive salaries and expenses confirms its all a scam to feather some ones nest. very littlle of whats contributed makes it to the people who need it.
my alternative is to continue to be helpful to those in genuine need be this a hotmeal or some item they may not be able to afford soap , toilet paper etc or simply doing an odd job for them gardening plumbing etc.
if we all helped those around us instead there would be no need for charities and those people would have to get proper jobs.

p.s. my eldest grandaughter asked whilst ve day came on the tv why do veterens only get a day and gays get a whole month. its a good question i cant think of a reason this should be so.

As usual, I'll be Mr sensible and check the weather before deciding which northern route to take. Either way and just for kicks I'll stay on the south side of Loch Ness taking the B852 to/from Inverness and depending how the mood takes me maybe bypass Glasgow via Stirling if I don't fancy meandering down the A82 alongside Loch Lomand with all the tourists.

First time Iron Butt'er here

Looking for some advice when signing up it asks for your IBA Number - I assume you only receive this after successfully completing your first iron butt ride? so guessing I need to leave this blank?

Also, the free camping option - Would this include vans or is there a supplement charge? likewise for electric?
Thinking of bringing the bike up in a van so I don't have to faff with tents ect... being somewhat "cost" conscious thinking I could throw a blow up bed in the back once the bike is out with a electric heater (if needed) so I can get a good night sleep and be "on location" immediately in the morning without spending daft money on hotels / guest houses.

I'm sure I wont be the first to do this kind of set up so any advice on this appreciated.

Final thing - which IBA rules apply to this ride (link if available) / how do I find them?
Info seems quite fragmented - Seen a lot of different ones depending on which ride ect... Mainly wanting to know maximum distance between fuel stops and rules on auxiliary tanks ect... as these seem to vary between rides / groups.

Thankyou!

Also, the free camping option
I have seen folk turn up with their bike in the back of the van, then unload & pitch up, but never one sleeping in the van, though I'm sure it's been done. The free camping field is just that, a private mown grass field around the back of the cafe, you pitch up where you like. It has a basic but functional shower/loo block. If you want an electrical hook up you'll have to book a pitch in the 'top field' caravan site that parrallel to the car park. You do this with Squires directly.

For this ride you don't need auxillary fuel tanks as all the receipt points are all at fuel stations and whilst there are some long sections between a couple of these, e.g. Berwick to Wick, there are plenty of other fuel stations on route. Fail to plan is to plan to fail and all that.

Which route are you planning to do?

EDIT and an unashamed plug: If you fancy meeting up with a few of us die hards and have a chat about doing the RLBR, there's a Ride To Eat this Saturday in Herefordshire. Basically, meet up, a bite to eat, chew the cud, kick some tyres and off you go.

Planning on doing the Scotland route, not set on direction yet however so would be good to chat!

The meet up on Saturday sounds good, looking at my Calendar I should be able to make it kiddos at a birthday party with her mum so that should give me a good amount of free time anyways - Perfect

Will come to the ride to eat on my Bonneville Bobber but not doing the 1000 miles on that… Christ I would need a spine of steel as well as an iron butt along with a trailer full of fuel although it’s cruise control would be a welcomed addition.

Will be doing the 1000 on my F800GT - already got an Aux tank fitted, just wanted to make sure it’s “Compliant” won’t let me upload images for some reason (perhaps new member restriction) did a thread on me making it on another forum if you fancy a gander at it however check out This Link

All being well, see you Saturday!

Even if you had a petrol tanker in tow, it would make no difference for the RBLR ride as the mandatory stops en route are "fixed" so you need a receipt regardless, even if for a Caramac and a can of Irn-Bru.

I understand that but that thing only gets about 120 miles to a tank meaning id probably fill up about 12 times during the course of the ride as i'd probably have to have a couple of "strategic fills" to ensure I didn't run dry in an inconvenient location :)
Wouldn't be a great bike for the job albeit I'm sure you'd manage if you had no other option :)

I think it was 2022 and there was 3 riders that did it on Honda monkeys absolute legends. It must have been hard work. I passed them going the other way in Wick. Despite the tiny tanks they still arrived not long after me. There’s quite often sports bikes and maxi scooters with only modest fuel range. A gentleman last year did it on a Firestorm which I know from owning one has roughly an 80-90 mile range.

Last year a guy did it on a Honda CMX500 and they've got just an 11.2L tank so it is doable, but you looks like you've got it sorted. As a side note I used to have an F800GT, a seriously underestimated biked.

See you Saturday.

I share your pain, my wife did this ride on an F650 with a range about the same - so many fuel stops and really eats into time - even at 5 minutes a time plus getting back into the flow if added over an hour to the ride and made for a long, long, ride and some nerves on the longer strectches in the far ends of Scotland. We did however visit Avimore on the way back to reminisce about getting married at the top of the mountain.

Booked- North anti clockwise. So hopefully wont see any exploding deer again around Edinburgh when it gets dark (a lorry hit one head on in front of me last year, very messy and scary)

Not just the deer to look out for on the RBLR1000, deer only rank at #8 of the most commonly reported roadkills in UK.

The top ten roadkills in the UK are: badger, pheasant, hedgehog, fox, rabbit, squirrel, pigeon, deer, gull and hare.

The worst roads for roadkill are: A1, M6, A1(M), M62 and M1

The Black Spots are: Southampton, Norwich, Perth, Inverness, and Ipswich

I best get on and sort out the onboard voltmeter, it's under reading by 0.3v and jumping between 13.5v & 13.6v when hot, need it to be accurate for the RBLR weekend.

So, go north (which I am) and we've got four out of the five worst roads and two of the five Black Spots to contend with. Gee thanks!

As for the hit list. Badger - no ; pheasant - yes ; hedgehog - yes ; fox (and a Labrador) - yes ; rabbit - yes ; squirrel - yes ; pigeon - yes ; deer, gull and hare - no, no & no. Most in cars, but I can attest to the fact that Wunderlich Marathon screens are tougher than Pheasants.

There is probably more roadkill down south due to the volumes of traffic and the fragile flowers most likely to whinge about and report it. Over the years I've run over so many hedgehogs, rabbits, pigeons, and squirrels I'm a serial roadkiller. Only one deer, it jumped clean over a hedgerow and landed on the bonnet of a brand new Mondeo, written off on the first day out of the showroom with less than 500 miles on the clock.
