Sad news....

Shocking news for everyone involved. It's just tragic how these things can happen seemingly at random. A few seconds either way... who knows.
RIP Ken. Condolences to the family and those close.
All the best for the best recovery possible Lindsay.
I know from experience it's a long recovery from serious injuries. And with an amputation, that certainly adds
further trauma and lifelong complications.
Thanks to those above for the updates.

Wombat, Ray, Muttley, myself and someone’s lovely wife attended Ken’s celebration of life. Ken lived a very full life, firstly as a man whose family was immensely proud of, a steady hand, a mentor and a sense of humour. Professionally he was respected as a principal, teacher, camp superintendent. I think what stood out to me was at the end one of the speakers remarked about how “people always speak well of the deceased, but in Ken’s case it was all true”.

Ken’s was clearly a life well lived, which makes what happened to he and Lindsay even more sad. I wish I’d known him better. I’ll take away how much he was loved by his family, his profession and the distance riding community over here. Also a challenge to enjoy every day we are privileged to live on this earth.

Wombat and Ray organised a catch up for the Southern Cross Distance Riders on Saturday morning, which was a very good idea under the circumstances.

Those who know him better will have more to say, but that’s how events this week appeared to me.

Vale Ken and heal well Lindsay.

Just dropping in for an update.

I continue to enjoy improvement to my health and strength.

Recently, I received permission to work on regaining my driving. This is because I need to use my left leg for foot control. Last Friday I was given an initial driving assessment of by a specialist OT. I must have done ok because today I received a text indicating that I could book more driving sessions, leading up to a final assessment.

I also, with a number of family members, attended the WA Supreme Court, to witness the sentencing of the perpetrator. I may post a link to the transcript later on when it becomes available.

The perpetrator pleaded guilty to a large number of charges, the main 2 being the manslaughter of Ken and GBH to me.

The outcome was 11 years, with the possibility of parole after 9 years. Also disqualified from driving for 2.75 years.

Nothing will bring Ken back or my leg back. It does bring some closure to this aspect of the journey.

I cannot express how grateful I am for the support I've received from all you guys. You are all amazing people and so supportive of me.

I'll hopefully see you soon, on a ride (drive)

I’d also like to nominate Ken to be added to the list of “Ridden On” riders.

Thanks

Hi Lindsay, thank you for taking the time to update us on your situation.

Great to hear you are gaining strength and your health in general is heading in the right direction.

Good luck with getting back to driving, that would no doubt give you a large degree of independence which would be a big bonus. You would be most welcome in a car at any gathering around here.

Fantastic hearing from you Lindsay.

Thanks for dropping in and for the update, Lindsay. Happy to hear your health and independence continue to improve and that things are evolving into a new normal.

I think I can speak for many others and say that it would be fantastic to have your continued involvement in our great little community here and at various physical locations around the country.

This last week I had my Mazda CX5 modified for a left foot accelerator from PME Auto Conversions

https://pmeautoconversions.com.au/driving-controls/pedal-modifications/left-foot-accelerators

More details on their website.

This morning I took the car for a drive and I’m really impressed with the conversion. It feels really seamless, as it should.

While the car was being modified, I was at Fiona Stanley hospital getting ready for meeting my new leg next week. I think this is going to be a big challenge, but with lots of encouragement from the team at FSH, as well as fellow amputees, I’m confident…

Glad to read you are moving forward in positive ways. What version of the left foot accelerator did you choose. The fold up version looks remarkably seamless. Best wishes in conquering the transition to the new leg. Moving ever forward!
