There must be construction or something going on there or at least Google thinks there is, because Google doesn't even want to let me drag the route to the correct roads

I was able to add a reroute and get it to follow I-10 proper through downtown. Oddly, it didn't want to show proper routing on the map until I released the spot on the highway. Specifically between the 202 and US60.

Here's what I got with the extra location added, and a couple more added in correct routing through L.A.

This just drives home the point made on the E2E page that routing can be tricky and you have to be on your game to make sure you're following the route of the main Interstate.

Random question, what's the protocol for these types of rides if the road is actually closed and detoured?

Don’t forget about I10 in New Orleans. Your link shows I12.

Per the main E2E page here: https://www.ironbutt.com/themerides/interstate/ie2e.html

It says this.

  • You must ride all your miles on the primary Interstate. EXCEPTIONS: Official highway closures (you must document this); deviations for emergency, repairs, or taking a wrong turn (you must resume your ride at the point of interstate departure); or fueling or rest breaks within one mile of the Interstate.
  • It is permissible to use Express/HOV/Toll lane, provided such lanes are parallel with, adjacent to, and signed the same as the primary Interstate.

Random question, what's the protocol for these types of rides if the road is actually closed and detoured?

I-10 in the Phoenix metro area has been experiencing intermittent closures, especially on weekends, due to construction in the area called the "Broadway Curve" as well as areas south of the US-60/I-10 interchange.

For those considering this (and other) rides, one might look up state-level information on-line prior to travel - example for this weekend:

https://azdot.gov/adot-news/adots-weekend-freeway-travel-advisory-june-24-27-phoenix-area

As you noted, if Google has knowledge that a route is closed, it won't route you there.
