The Great Pie Ride of 2026. A SS1600 while eating Pie

Saturday March 14 2026 was Pi (Pie) day, so what better reason to go riding? I was up early knocking on the door of The Little Lebanon Bakery in Bankstown to collect my starting docket and compulsory pie eating selfie. The staff were bemused to see their first customer of the morning being some weird looking guy dressed up in riding gear, but they got into the spirt of the event and warmed up some delicious pies, which I wolfed down for breakfast.

That done, I made my out onto the roads to make my way over the Blue Mountains heading for Mudgee. With the road closure on the Great Western Highway at Mt Victoria, I was prepared for some slow progress, but the run up the Highway to Mt Victoria was good, with the usual sprinkling of dark o’clock traffic. At the detour onto the Causeway to Bells Line, this was all Ok also, traffic was moving well, slightly slower, but otherwise good. Once on Bells Line into Lithgow, it was a lot slower due to the volume of trucks combined with the steep downhill low gear caution meant just being patient. Once through Lithgow and heading for Mudgee the road was clear, the stars were out with the Clearwaters up on high carving out the way forward through the rolling hills.

Beautiful Mudgee at first light

Rolled into Mudgee on first light, not much happening for this time of the morning, continuing on to my next pie stop scheduled for Wellington. Fueled up both tanks in Wellington at a cost of over $80, yikes! The servo attendant wanted to know what size tank have you got on that thing? We had a good laugh at my expense, then I made way to Sangs bakehouse for my next pie. Or so I thought, on arrival I discovered it was closed. Hmmm, Google info was wrong, dammit. A quick recalc of my ride plan had me back on track with bakeries rescheduled for West Wyalong followed by Holbrook, or so I thought.

The Newell Highway at a stop for roadworks. A perfect autumn day to be riding the Newell

Rolling into West Wyalong I discovered the bakery there was closed. OK, back to the original plan to eat Pie at Narrandera bakery and then hope to find an open bakery/café in the afternoon/evening on my way back to Sydney, but 320kms minimum out (minimum distance between pies) The ride on the Newell was awesome, the sun was out, temperatures were in the low to mid 20’s. The riding was good.

Narrandera Bakery, always good a good place to take a moment

At Narrandera, I took 20 minutes off the bike to eat pie and collect the other important essentials this ride was for (Narrandera is the home of the worlds best dressings).

Pie Selfie # 2, and yep it was good!

And here's the other reason I was in Narrandera

Fueled up and made my way south to Culcairn and Ettamogah, my theoretical turn around point for the run back to Sydney. As I rode along, I plotted out some further bakery options, with the Gunna Doo in Bungendore looking most likely as a solution on the fly. I called them from Ettamogah to confirm they would be open late, which they were, but gave no guarantees on pie availability.

Eattamogah, my turnaround point on this ride, time to make my way home

The run northwards on the Hume to Canberra and out to Bungendore all went well, brilliant autumn sunshine, with the temperatures creeping into the high 20’s. Parked out the front of the Gunna Doo bakery and walked in to see plenty of pie still available. I celebrated with a good ol plain meat pie backed up with the fruit turnover (apple pie) They were delicious!

The Gunna Doo Bakery at 5:40pm on a Saturday, still open with pie for sale. (They saved this ride)

Pie # 3 for the ride, followed by dessert pie. Dericous!

From here it was head east on the Kings Highway in the setting sun, a ride I have ridden many times over the years. Today was magical, with the setting sun on my back and zero traffic.

My Spotwalla tracker for this ride

Fueled up in Batemans Bay and pointed the bike northwards on Princes Highway for the last pie of the day where I rolled into McDonalds Caringbah right on schedule for a iconic Macca’s apple pie washed down with a hot choccie.

Selfie # 4, closing out the ride with an iconic Maccas Apple Pie. Good times!

Finishing Docket, Job Done!

A good way to close out an awesome day riding. The great pie ride of 2026 was done, with 1,645 kms on the GPS.

It's possible I may have over indulged on pie throughout the day, but no one can say I am not committed to the cause. :D

The moto will need a clean, for now, back into storage ready for the next.
