A few days off

If you look at the first 7 SPOT pings this morning, you can see that his SPOT was already playing up.

I am in Sydney, but don't have a SPOT unit to lend him. He could load Bubbler or SWTracker onto his phone, but it would be better if he could borrow a SPOT or some other dedicated device.

I did notice that this morning that it appears to have bounced back and forth. I know over the years I have seen this on a few Spot location pings, not sure if that is a satelite error? I've had a similar discussion with Skidoo about it also.

I don't think it is a satellite problem because his automatic "10 minute" pings went through in the correct sequence and at the correct times, but his "OK" special ping was delayed for 20 minutes, suggesting he had "doubled back" to Mt Barker.

I even plotted out the Lat/Long & time frames and at one stage he was doing 6,592 kph. I'm guessing that the IBA would consider this speed "excessive".

Thank you for your support and comments.

My spot took a big hit when I came off the bike in March. It seemed to be working fine on a test ride but did stop as in today. Fresh batteries were put in before I left
Now the device is completely dead and won't turn on

I made Sydney for the night, 30 minutes ahead of schedule
The ride goes on without spot. I should be leaving coogee about 0230.
Now for sleep

Once again thank you for all your support and comments

I have a deactivated spot sitting here going to waste. If Jeff is going west he'll have to pass near here and he is welcome to have it. Should only take a phone call to reanimate it in place of the dead one?

Thinking the same thing Daisy. I let the subscription run out, but it will still work manually.
YSMV, but I have heard stories of folks letting their subscriptions expire but not actually calling SPOT and canceling the service and deactivating their device, only to find out when they passed their device to someone else that SPOT still considered it "Active" for emergency services (even without tracking) and refuse to activate it under a new account until the old account was brought up to date with "past-due" fees.

Their resoning is that without an official cease-of-services request by the original owner, they are obligated to respond to any SOS messages the device might send, even if the account is inactive.

Jeff's wife Helen has indicated he left Sydney early morning (sorry don't know exact time, assuming around 02.30am).

He was approaching his first fuel stop at Narrandera a short time ago.

Jeff's SPOT still not working and he attempted to get Bubbler operating but had no luck with that also.

"Grey Gentry", not sure Ron if you know how to connect Bubbler with his Spotwalla acct? Something for you guys to talk about maybe? ;)

If he has the bubbler app on his phone, you need to open his Spotwalla account and go to the device manager page and choose +”add” give the device a name and choose “ bubbler” from the drop down menu. Close out of that page and go to the current trip and scroll all the way to the bottom to the device pane, open that and put a tick next to the new device. You should be good to go.
Apologies if I’m preaching to the converted.

We did actually call them to deactivate ours. Whether they cancelled or suspended it is anyone's guess.

I handed Jeff my now unused Spot 3. I've returned home to reconfigure it, but it's not listed as a device on my account. ???
I'll ring the crew in the US to, hopefully, rectify the situation, and then I can reconfigure.

Rode to Euston the morning, past 4 NSW government workers, one who was waving his hand up and down dramatically, pointing down.
Jeff arrived, I run as the shield, Jeff stopped at Buronga for fuel (on schedule), where we had a brief chat. Bypassed Mildura City, the best we can, proceeded to the SA Quarantine Station, where we departed ways. With only one road side traffic speed inhibitor, the escort through Victoria was successful. Around 400km for me today.
He mentioned the Gillenbah Servo docket doesn't have a location, and he had to deviate into Narrandera to obtain one. Ilpo (with Gunter pillion), Marls and I had to do the same thing years ago on our successful BB2500.

Just to advise ignore if not useful, if you connect your spot to a USB supply it by-passes the batteries, which do not get charged by the USB connection....
I use this to prevent loss of power, if the USB fails the batteries pick up the task, it could be the faulty spot would work on USB rather than battery.

If no USB on the bike a portable power bank, like the ones to charge your phone, would suffice, providing you can mount it with some cable ties.

i do the same. I’ve run a cable from the USB port under my passenger seat to the bars where my Spot is mounted.
