Fuel is still cheaper than water in the outback. Not as cheap as the US though.
For the 2013 IBR our dollar was about parity when a gallon was approaching USD$4. That was cheap for an Aussie used to paying USD$1.50 per litre here ($5.70 a gallon) for 98 premium at the time.
Now our dollar is getting slammed and fuel prices have dropped, but US fuel remains cheap.
We don't pre-pay here in Oz. Just roll up, fill up, pay up, ride off. With a full 11.5 gallon load I have had a couple of attendants come out to look "I've never seen a motorbike take over 40 litres before!".
