Come on people, Mike has very kindly offered to assist in this tricky area and I doubt whether any of us can do better by ourselves so let's get the information to him as quickly as possible and help him make things easy for all of us.

btw. Has anyone connected/idea to/ with locals to have some activity meet/spend time with them ? For example, red square we won't get with bikes without local permission.

I've been trying to find a way that I could still make this ride but between the BBR & getting my bike to the shippers for my American trip it's had become impossible so regrefully I'm going to have to withdraw. I hope everyone else has a fabulous adventure.

NAVIGATION ISSUES

It's possible to install maps from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ into BaseCamp but, unless you want to install all of Europe from osm, you'll need to treat Russia separately to the rest of the world and I have yet to try installing an osm map on my Zumo.
I have both ones, in my Zumo 590 standard CN Europe plus that mentioned OSM map as secondary map (in SD card ). You don't need to install all of EU, just manually select tiles (when building the map) and switch maps when crossing the border - and do route planning in Basecamp separately as well. In my backup device Zumo 660 I have uploaded Garmin CN Russia from local russian Garmin representative store, "under the desk", job costed some 20 eur.

Other places to have OSM maps:

http://gis-lab.info/data/mp/ -> these have quite ok for routing, just cyrillics
http://maptourist.org/file/category/3-garmin -> Maptourist has very nice translittered OSM versio for planning purposes (basecamp) - just their routing is not reliable at all.

OSM maps are more accurate and have more details than Garmin CN (Russia), just those routing issues makes living sometimes more complicated. But luckily Basecamp allows you to install several maps.

OK sorry but bad news. I cannot get to my satisfaction accurate figures for you.

Also as the premium is relatively small (in the general scheme of things) a fee would be required from our Moscow office they indicate £1,000 as a starting point for the block policy.

Whilst not satisfactory buying at the border could be considerably cheaper.

Once again apologies.

Re Insurance.
You could maybe try Campbell Irvine 0207 938 1734 I think the guy I spoke to was Mick Berry.
They gave us fully comp from Panama to Alaska to the bottom of Chille also UK to Cape Town via Middle East.
After saying that I would buy 3rd Party at the boarder to be legal then wing it.
Hope that helps and good luck JC.

Easy for you to say Coxy.
Which self respecting Russian bike thief is going to pinch a Honda Crossdresser with half a million miles on it ?;)
Maybe some of the spares will fit his Ural :D

Right had another go at this.

All Russian insurers who do this type of cover have no quoted.

This is probably due to amount of work involved for little or no return for them.

This leaves the border option or a specialist travel broker who does a lot of this type of thing. Unfortunately I don't know of any.

Looking at Campbell Irvine, they seem to specialise in Travel Insurance & whilst this is important the motor side is where if it all goes wrong you will have the biggest cost/legal problems.
